Exhibition on the Bagpipe at Museu da Música Mecânica

On March 9th, the Municipality of Palmela will inaugurate the Exhibition "Sound Landscape - the Bagpipe", at Museu da Música Mecânica, in Pinhal Novo, which will be open until October 2nd.

The exhibition on this popular musical instrument, which has a strong expression in the Municipality of Palmela, is organized by the Municipality, in partnership with Museu da Música Mecânica, FIG – Festival Internacional de Gigantes, Associação Portuguesa para o Estudo e Disseminação da Gaita de Foles, Círio dos Olhos d'Água, Círio da Carregueira and Bardoada - Sarrafo Group.

This initiative is part of "Palmela é Música", Palmela's application to join the UNESCO’s Creative Cities Network in the field of music, and it is another opportunity for the Municipality to publicly highlight its commitment, as well as its partners’, to the whole process.

The exhibition is due to open at 4:30 p.m. and will feature the special participation of Orquestra de Foles da Associação Portuguesa para o Estudo e Divulgação da Gaita de Foles (Portuguese Bagpipe Orchestra of the Association for the Study and Dissemination of the Bagpipe).

Opening times will be from Tuesday to Sunday, from 2:30 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. (closed on Easter Sunday), with access being made by presenting the admission ticket to the Museum. Visitors will have the opportunity to learn more about the history and the making of the bagpipe, about musicians and repertoires, and about “círios” (popular pilgrimages) and bagpipers.

"The bagpipe is a musical instrument that was first made up of a raw material found in nature. By then, it started filling the vastness of the pastures with an unmistakable sound. Vibrant and strident, it echoes the personality of the one who plays it.

Its repertoire, mostly based on oral tradition, was passed down from generation to generation, a movement of survival, both of the instrument and of the musicians, whole-souled pipers.

Nowadays, it takes on new dynamics and is played by men and women in the most varied musical contexts. It is a sound landscape that fascinates us and that has a unique expression in the municipality of Palmela”.
