If you visit the site “Palmela is Music”, you can listen to (and watch!) “O Nome Novo” (“The New Name”), the 6th movement of Sinfonia Palmela, a musical project by the conductor Jorge Salgueiro that has celebrated the Palmela Municipality’s Day, since 2015. An initiative of the Palmela Town Hall, Sinfonia Palmela is a landmark in the cultural landscape of the municipality.
The work SINFONIA PALMELA seeks to unify the musical potentialities of the municipality and is inspired by the characteristics of the parishes of the municipality of Palmela (the five ones we know of based on recent history and not the current 4 administrative ones).
The composer was inspired by the history, the name, the characteristics of each parish, in a free poetic way. Another challenge posed by this work was the willingness to represent all the musical associations in Cineteatro São João. How to accommodate more than 150 musicians and singers there? This willingness was one of the engines of the work’s architecture, which has spatiality as one of its main parameters.
The Palmela Municipality’s Anthem is interpreted at the opening and closing of the ceremony, and it is also available as an audiovisual record at the site Palmela é Música –www.palmelaemusica.pt.
