Judas Burning Ritual is recreated in the Historic Centre of Palmela

On April 20th, the Burning of Judas, an initiative of the Town Hall along with the county’s associative movement, will be back to the streets of the Historic Centre of Palmela.

Bardoada – Sarrafo Group will perform all through the parade, which will start at 9:30 p.m., at Largo dos Loureiros and go through several places where they will burn a male doll (“Queima do boneco”) and read its will.

This year, 15 groups will participate in “Queima”:

  • Bardoada - Grupo do Sarrafo (animação;
  • Grupo Coral “Ausentes do Alentejo” (bar);
  • Serviços Sociais e Culturais dos Trabalhadores do Município de Palmela (bar);
  • Passos e Compassos - Grupo Férias Culturais;
  • Associação de Escoteiros de Portugal - Grupo 40;
  • Motoclube de Palmela;
  • Os Indiferentes;
  • As Avozinhas;
  • Sociedade Filarmónica Palmelense “Loureiros”;
  • Teatro Sem Dono;
  • Sociedade Columbófila de Palmela;
  • Sociedade Filarmónica Humanitária;
  • ATA – Teatro Artimanha;
  • Associação dos Idosos de Palmela;
  • Teatro da Vila.

The parade will end at Largo de S. João, where the band and the Devils of Bardoada - Sarrafo Group will throw fireworks, and where the Town Hall’s Will will be read as the people watch the Burning of Judas.

The Ritual of Burning Judas, which was retrieved in 1995, has pagan origins, is linked to the celebration of spring and integrates the Municipal Theatre Programme, thus contributing to the preservation of the local cultural heritage.
